Electric muscle stimulation is a physical therapy modality that is used to stimulate muscle contractions using electrodes hooked up to an electric stimulation machine. These contractions help to manage inflammation, strengthen the muscle and control pain. When providing electric muscle stimulation to a patient, Dr. Horton places electrodes on the affected areas of the body—around the back, neck, shoulder, wrist, knee or ankle. She will adjust the machine controls until the patient feels a prickly sensation and is able to comfortably target the level of stim without any stinging, burning or feeling a stabbing sensation. The stimulation will increase circulation and reduce swelling thereby reducing pain sensations.
